Last of the Mohicans, The (1992)

I seriously hope you guys at least know the story as written by James Fenimore Cooper. A lot of it was changed for the film, but is still very beautiful. It's the time in history when french and britain soldiers battle for domination in colonial America. Chingachgook and his son Uncas are the last surviving members of the powerful tribe called the Mohicans. Together with Nathaniel "Hawkeye" Poe, who was raised as Uncas' brother, they are hunting deer in the frontier land. Cora and Alice Munro are the daughters of a british officer. While travelling to the fort where their father is waiting for them, they are being attacked by Magua and his Hurons. Before Magua manages to kill the young women, though, Chingachgook, Uncas and Nathaniel interfere. The three men decide to lead Cora, Alice and their friend Duncan to the fort. Duncan is in love with Cora and doesn't like that she seems to be interested in Nathaniel. He makes things very difficult for the other characters. Magua never gives up on hunting the women, because he wants personal revenge from their father for his own dead children. Seeing Hawkeye falls in love with Cora, too, he and his adopted family get deeply involved in the british, french and native american struggles. But although the film (sadly) focuses on the relationship between Nathaniel and Cora, the story of quiet Uncas and gentle Alice is far more touching. If you really don't know how it ends, I do not want to give away what happens. Knowing the title and this summary you can probably guess anyway. This is a truly moving film supported by the most wonderful music.

Lord of the Rings

Urk, how to describe a film trilogy really everybody has seen? Okay, so this is the story about small Frodo fullfilling a big task. He has to journey to a dark land full of evil to destroy the Ring of (evil) Power. At the beginning, he is accompanied by a fellowship in which each race of the fictitious world Middle-Earth is represented. Later, the company splits up and each member has to go through their own adventure until they meet again for the big finale. This summary sucks, but the films don't, even though the director Peter Jackson overdid it sometimes (stunts). It's a great story (written by J.R.R. Tolkien for those who really don't know) that even survived the transfer from book to movie version. Besides, the views on New Zealand are just breathtaking and enough reason to watch the films.

Love's Brother

A very beautiful film, but hardly known. The brothers Angelo and Gino Donnini went from Italy to Australia to make a better life. Gino is a self-confident and good-looking person, Angelo is extremely shy. Gino has a lovely girlfriend while Angelo is corresponding with young women in Italy to find a suitable wife. But whenever he sends his photo, he gets rejected. So, one day he sends the photo of his brother. The reply comes quickly, the woman wants to marry him. She does her wedding vows in her hometown and travels across the world to meet her husband... You can imagine in what complications that results, but I won't tell more, because in my opinion it isn't the usual storyline from there on. I very much enjoyed that movie, so go and see it!
