The Mummy (Returns)

I love these movies, even in spite of all the goofs! The first made me laugh a lot, the second has some real good action and almost drama-like sequences in it. Both are full of good effects. In ancient Egypt, Pharao Seti finds out about his bride's relationship with high priest Imhotep. Both kill him in consequence. While his love Anck Sunamun suicides, Imhotep is cursed with the Hom Dai. The pharao's guards, the Medjai, have to make sure that he won't be awaken as he would bring the 10 plagues upon the world again. Unfortunately, 3000 years later, the clumsy librarian Evelyn Carnahan, her brother Jonathan and adventurer Rick O'Connell as well as a rivaling group stumble over Imhotep's grave and free 'the creature'. Aided by the Medjai's leader Ardeth Bay, they try everything to stop the angry mummy. The second film is set about 8 years after the first story. Evelyn (now a tough woman) and Rick are married. Because he is wearing the Bracelet of Anubis, their son Alex gets kidnapped by people who reawake Imhotep. The high priest succeeds in bringing his love back to life and plans to unleash the Army of Anubis to rule the world. Evy, Rick, Jonathan and Ardeth follow Imhotep to the oasis of Ahm Shere. On the way, Evelyn regains memories of her previous life as daughter of Seti and... I really don't wanna give away any more.

National Treasure

For generations, family Gates has been searching a treasure collected by the templars and hidden by the Founding Fathers. Benjamin Franklin Gates tries to decipher one cryptic clue after the other. Finally, one points to an invisible map on the back of the Declaration of Independence. His partner Ian Howe (Sean Bean!) who unlike Benjamin is only interested in the gold instead of historical values plans to steal it in consequence. So, Ben and his friend Riley try to warn the curator of the National Archive, Abigail Chase. She sends them away, not believeing a crazy story like theirs. Now, what would be the best way to protect the Declaration? - Steal it, of course.

Open Hearts

My favourite film of the last ten years at least! Joachim is paralyzed in a car accident. His fiancé Cecilie tries to support him, but can barely cope with his uncontrolled outbursts of bitterness. The woman who drove the car asks her husband Niels - a doctor at the hospital where Joachim is being treated - to help her. He does so and falls in love with her. When Cecilie begins an affair with him, he thinks that the feeling is mutual. Though he suffers from having to lie his wife, he also is happy. But Cecilie doesn't want to abandon Joachim. She isn't sure if she loves Niels or just needs comfort. She doesn't begin to think about it until Niels clearly tells her he wants a serious relationship. Open Hearts is a Dogme film and the concept increases the effect the story has over the audience. It's hard to describe for me what makes the film so special, so I'll just give you 3 reviews written by others:
Gunnar Rehlin, Variety: Poignant, thoughtful and utterly absorbing, Open Hearts is a gem.
Chris Roberts, uncunt: Deeply moving and involving... beautifully observed, with acting so fine it hurts... tender, tough and true...
Alan Morrison, Empire: Exceptionally honest and strikingly unsentimental, this is a rare film that treats its audience and characters with respect.
